Support Staff on the Reference Desk: An Integrative Approach, presented by Margaret Harmon-Myers @ Eugene Public Library and Sara Webster @ Beaverton City Library

As library users’ information needs and behaviors have changed over the last decade, so have traditionally-compartmentalized reference and circulation desk roles. Library assistants and other support staff are key players in advancing the integration: With training, practice, and mentorship from librarians, these paraprofessionals are highly confident and capable first-line reference desk responders. Learn how support staff network with professional colleagues and each other to provide excellent and expert reference service to patrons.

After 10 years of public school teaching, Margaret Harmon-Myers shifted to public libraries, working as Children’s and Young Adult Librarian at Klamath County Library for 6 years. She has now been at Eugene Public Library for over 17 years working in Adult Reference Services. She has been involved in OLA for 20 years, and is the Chair of the Support Staff Division of OLA.

Sara Webster is a Library Assistant with Beaverton City Library – Murray Scholls Branch, three years and going strong! She particularly enjoys geology reference questions and introducing people to the wonders of eBooks.
