Do-It-Yourself Reference Training, presented by Emily-Jane Dawson @ Multnomah County Library
Training is vital for nurturing a skilled, agile reference staff. It can be expensive, time consuming, and difficult to arrange. But any group of library staff can create their own trainings, for each other. It’s easier than you might think!
Emily-Jane Dawson aspired to be a reference librarian for the sheer joy of finding things out, in detail, with citations. But in the end she fell in love with serving the people — listening to patrons, building relationships, and yes, occasionally solving an information puzzle. She has worked for 15 years at Multnomah County Central Library in Portland, where she also has the pleasure of helping colleagues learn and teach each other about reference and public service.
